The Dark Between is the third piece in the What Remains series — six large-format mixed media paintings exploring what persists in a landscape after disruption. Built on a cyan base layered with deep indigo and black ink, the background holds ghost impressions of Snowberry, Horseweed and Dalmatian Toadflax — pressed into wet ink then removed, leaving only their traces in an unexpected deep purple.

Cyan pools of light break through the darkness like moonlight on water. Tartarian Honeysuckle sprigs — magenta blooms with small yellow-green leaves — are permanently embedded throughout, deliberately placed to draw the eye around the canvas in a constellation of color. Bright green lichen anchors everything to the earth below. Three colors — cyan, indigo, turquoise — created an entire nocturnal world. Nothing here is accidental. Everything that remains was placed with intention.

Note: The painting is protected with multiple coats of Fine Art Fixative to help shield against UV damage, as well as archival varnish spray for added UV protection. Hanging paintings in direct sunlight will affect color retention over time.
