Late Frost is the sixth and final piece in the What Remains series — six large-format mixed media paintings exploring what persists in a landscape after disruption. On a pearlescent black ground with a subtle silver sheen, the ghost impressions of Japanese maple and red maple leaves fill the canvas — pressed into wet ink, then removed, leaving only their distinctive star-shaped traces.

Fragments of warm coral left behind by the red maple leaves became the color cue for the foreground: Japanese Quince blossoms, permanently embedded and rising from bright green lichen, answer the warmth already hidden in the darkness. The piece closes the series on a note of quiet endurance — color and life persisting not despite the cold, but because of it.

Note: The painting is protected with multiple coats of Fine Art Fixative to help shield against UV damage, as well as archival varnish spray for added UV protection. Hanging paintings in direct sunlight will affect color retention over time.
