Refrain is the limited edition companion to the What Remains series — six original mixed media paintings exploring what persists in a landscape after disruption. Created specifically for collectors who connect with the series but seek an accessible entry point, Refrain is available in three hand-embellished editions, each one uniquely finished and never exactly the same.
The source painting is built on a white gesso ground layered with pearlescent and metallic inks in silver, white and warm taupe. Ghost impressions of Pacific Northwest grasses — Perennial Ryegrass, Rat's-tail Fescue and Cheatgrass — fill the background, pressed into wet ink then removed, leaving only their delicate, fossil-like traces. At center, Yarrow rises from a bed of ancient lichen permanently embedded at the base — its architectural flat-topped blooms one of the most enduring wildflowers in the Western landscape.
Each canvas print is hand-embellished with real lichen and gold leaf, making every edition a unique object rather than a simple reproduction. Signed, dated and numbered on the back. The sides are painted in warm taupe, completing the composition as a gallery-ready piece.
Refrain asks the same quiet question as the originals — what does a landscape hold onto? — in a palette stripped of color, reduced to its most essential elements. What remains when everything else falls away is structure, persistence, and light.
